The earliest year in this note is 1866, for the trespass rule as a whole. The note's last entry is a 2022 act, and we haven't traced which act added the purple-paint wording, so it may be much newer.
Our reading
In South Carolina a landowner can post land with paint instead of signs. The quoted paint-notice provision specifies clearly visible vertical purple marks at least eight inches long and two inches wide, with their bottoms three to six feet above the ground or normal water level. The marks must be on immovable, permanent objects no more than one hundred yards apart and readily visible to someone approaching the property. The same section makes entry onto another's land, after notice prohibiting entry has been posted or given, a misdemeanor.
Written by Silly Rules from the quoted text above. It's a plain reading, not legal advice. We haven't researched how courts read this section or how often anyone enforces it.
