Odd official state symbols

A state muffin, an official groundhog, a duck decoy and the national bird.

Our overview

Legislatures name official symbols in statute, and some of the choices are delightfully specific. Minnesota's official muffin is blueberry, Nevada's official state artifact is the tule duck decoy, and Massachusetts names a single animal, Ms. G of the Massachusetts Audubon Society, as its official groundhog.

South Carolina made boiled peanuts its official snack food and added a sentence saying that doesn't require or encourage schools to serve peanuts. At the federal level, the U.S. Code names the bald eagle the national bird in a section added in December 2024.

The 5 laws

Minnesota · Minn. Stat. § 1.1496, “State muffin”

“The blueberry muffin is adopted as the official muffin of the state of Minnesota.”

Our reading

Nevada's official state artifact is a duck decoy

Nevada · NRS 235.085, “State artifact”

“The object of human workmanship known as the tule duck decoy is hereby designated as the official state artifact of the State of Nevada.”

Our reading

Nevada has an official state artifact, and the statute picks the tule duck decoy. The law describes it as an object of human workmanship.
