What the law says
“It shall hereafter be unlawful for any person, firm, association, or corporation to sell or offer for sale, either in wholesale or retail lots, any horse or mule meat under the guise or name of beef”
“without having attached thereto, a tag or other mark for identification plainly and legibly setting forth the true name of the animal from which such meat or flesh was taken or without having prominently displayed over or in conjunction with such meat or flesh, a legible sign or placard containing the true name of the animal from which the same was taken and without also advising the purchaser thereof by verbal, written or printed notice of the true name of the animal from which such meat or flesh was taken.”
Penalty
This section doesn't print a penalty of its own. Other parts of the Missouri Revised Statutes may set one; we haven't looked them up, so we don't state one here.
The earliest year in this note is 1919. That's the earliest year the note prints. It doesn't establish when this wording was enacted, took effect or first appeared.
In plain English
Our reading
Missouri says meat has to be sold as what it is. Horse or mule meat can't be passed off as beef, wholesale or retail, and the section goes on to require a tag, sign or placard naming the animal the meat came from, plus spoken, written or printed notice to the buyer.
Written by Silly Rules from the quoted text above. It's a plain reading, not legal advice. We haven't researched how courts read this section or how often anyone enforces it.
